Ramón Bilbao has announced plans to invest in its own winery and vineyards in the Rueda DO, with a view to introducing further premium Verdejo wines to its portfolio.
For the last five years, the producer has worked in partnership with Rueda’s Diez Siglos de Verdejo but will, in 2015, build its own winery in Municipio de Rueda surrounded by 60 hectares of vineyards. Winemaker and Technical Director Rodolfo Bastida says that he hopes to have his first harvest from Ramón Bilbao’s own vineyards in 2020.
“We have long believed in the potential of Verdejo in Rueda and have been exploring possibilities in the region with our partner winery for a number of years,” he says. “Now it’s time for us to fully commit to creating innovative, terroir-driven, premium wines there and to investigate other varietals – and having our own winery and vineyards gives us the freedom to do this.”
Ramón Bilbao plans to continue its current partnership with Diez Siglos for the foreseeable future. Verdejo is performing particularly well on the domestic Spanish market, with double digit volume growth over the last few years.
