WINERIES FOR CLIMATE PROTECTION

circle

Since 2017, we have belonged to the Wineries for Climate Protection programme, the first and only specific certification for the wine sector with regard to environmental sustainability backed by the FEV (Spanish Wine Federation). In addition, we were the first winery in Spain to also certify our vineyard.

2016-2020 OBJECTIVES

We are working on 4 Pillars to become more sustainable:

  • WATER MANAGEMENT
  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY
  • REDUCTION OF GHG EMISSIONS
  • WASTE REDUCTION

2016-2020 OBJECTIVE: reduce water consumption, waste production, and greenhouse gas emission rates by 20% and increase the use of renewable energy by 20%.

WATER MANAGEMENT

We are currently taking steps to achieve the proposed objectives.

To achieve this goal, we have implemented a smart irrigation system.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY

Of the objective has been achieved.

To achieve this goal, we use LED lights.

WATER MANAGEMENT

We have surpassed the proposed objective.

To achieve this goal, we use a biomass boiler.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY

We have surpassed the proposed objective.

To achieve this goal, we have built a new purification plant.

A SUSTAINABLE VINEYARD

circle

We owe all of our success to the land we cultivate, the land that has allowed us to achieve greatness. And in order to return a little bit of what it has given us, we use techniques in our vineyard that seek sustainability.

1

SEXUAL CONFUSION IN THE VINEYARD.

OBJECTIVE: to reduce the use of phytosanitaries.

We have installed pheromone diffusers that use sexual confusion to prevent pests such as moths from laying their eggs in the grapes.

2

ORGANIC FERTILISERS OF OVINE ORIGIN.

OBJECTIVE: to not use chemical fertilisers.

The sheep manure we use allows us to replace nutrients extracted through grape production and improve the soil’s biological activity.

3

SUSTAINABLE MACHINERY.

OBJECTIVE: to reduce gas emissions.

We use latest generation machinery that has a minimal impact on gas emissions.

4

PREVENTIVE TREATMENT IN THE VINEYARD.

OBJECTIVE: to reduce the use of phytosanitaries.

We train the viticulturists we work with in biodynamic culture, seeking a balance between securing production and conserving the environment.

5

PRECISION AGRICULTURE.

OBJECTIVE: to use resources efficiently and to reduce the use of phytosanitaries.

We use technology such as smart irrigation, weather stations and drones to compile information and improve vineyard efficiency.

6

ALTITUDE.

OBJECTIVE: to adapt cultivation systems to delay ripening.

We cultivate high-altitude vineyards, achieving optimal ripeness, improving ventilation to prevent disease and obtaining products with a fresh profile.

7

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT.

OBJECTIVE: to seek alternatives to treatments and reduce their use.

In order to understand our soil and the biodiversity within it and to be able to apply sustainable solutions, we have several R+D projects underway, such as studies on the microbiota, trunk diseases, and prevention of powdery and downy mildew.

8

RESPECT FOR FAUNA.

OBJECTIVE: to promote biodiversity and the environmental conservation.

We have installed wooden nests to encourage goshawk breeding as well as perches for the birds of prey.

2020 ROADMAP

circle

2020 Programme Implementation

  • WATER MANAGEMENT
  • ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY
  • REDUCTION OF GHG EMISSIONS
  • WASTE REDUCTION
  • SUSTAINABLE VINEYARD

2016-2020 OBJECTIVE: reduce water consumption, waste production, and greenhouse gas emission rates by 20% and use 100% renewable energy.

WATER MANAGEMENT

Personnel awareness Cleaning protocols New tools Daily monitoring by sector

To achieve this goal, we have implemented a plan that ranges from personnel awareness to a new cleaning protocol, as well as replacing some current tools.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY

Self-generated electricity

In order to become a company with minimal energy impact, in 2020 we will install solar panels on the rooftops at our Haro winery, which will result in a 50% savings on electrical energy.

WATER MANAGEMENT

Water purification

Programme to purify the wash water from vats used for treatments in the field.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY

Monte Yerga and Aguilones

Programme to promote the flora and fauna associated with cultivation and the vineyard environment, as well as providing an ecological benefit to the crop (natural pest and weed control).

ENERGY EFFICIENCY / RENEWABLE ENERGY

Ecological test at Rueda / Monte Yerga

Starting in 2020, we will work all of our vineyards organically, designating two locations for possible certification.
